Additional Notes from District

Hi All,

Even though I try to limit emails, I want to make sure you receive District communication.  Hopefully, between Principal Weekly  Notes and my "communication" you are kept in the "loop".

Please keep me posted as to how the "Brenda's Blog Bits" are working for you.  I owe two McKinley teachers coffee cards for being the first ones to respond and one Candalaria teacher for "adding comments" on the blog page:). Thanks for the input!

Writing Festival Information:
Children’s Writing Festival "Tell Me A Story"
May 10,2012 6PM – 8:30, Parrish Middle School
Each year Capital Reading Council of the ORA and Salem-Keizer School District host a writing festival open to all the elementary schools in Salem-Keizer for the purpose of recognizing and celebrating excellence in writing. Schools participate by reviewing student writing, nominating one piece from each grade level to be presented for display the evening of the event.
At 6:00PM the doors open with parents, teachers, students roaming down the aisles of Parrish Middle School multipurpose room enthusiastically reading the many genre pieces represented. The crowd’s excitement rises as students see their text displayed and joyfully announce "Here it is!" all the while munching on cookies and balancing juice in hand.
At 6:30, the crowd is invited into Parrish auditorium to hear the guest author’s presentation, this year
Each child walks across the stage receiving a signed copy of the author’s book, certificate of participation and a heart bursting with pride. "I am a writer."
We invite you all to come celebrate the efforts of our students by supporting the importance of writing in their life. See you at
Look for information arriving at your school the first of March. Please start collecting those writing piece NOW for possible entries. Thank you so much.
Marie Smith, co-author of B is for Beaver, watch the award ceremonies and hear the recitation of a few outstanding pieces of children’s writing. What a gift this is to our students to have a purpose and audience for their writing. Parrish on May 10, 2012 at 6PM. Kathy Moran

New Professional Book:
Featured book available in the Professional Development Library. Engagement is a hot topic these days among educators at all levels and in all disciplines. Standards, curricula, and assessment tools have been built and rebuilt to provide excellence and achievement, but now we are faced with the one variable that can turn all this effort into ash: the students.
You’ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them shows the reader how to engage students and bring out their best, and how to create an environment in which students feel confident and safe enough to take risks, make mistakes, and immerse themselves in stimulating learning experiences. Above all, this book demands that an authentic joy for learning be returned to the classroom. You’ve Got to Reach Them to Teach Them examines topics such as relationships, emotions, environment, and expectations, all of which have a major impact on student engagement.
Each chapter is divided into three segments.
1.
2.
Notes From the Field illustrates the chapter s topic in a real-life frame through mediums such as journal entries, vignettes, and student comments. The Discussion provides a closer look at the topic, including research and the topic s importance and relevance in the classroom. 3. Steps Toward Solutions offers practical strategies for implementing the discussed ideas in the classroom. The author provides space for the reader to reflect on his or her thoughts at both the beginning and end of each chapter, and encourages the reader to set a goal of one new strategy as a result of the information given in the chapter.

Brenda's Bits Week of Feb. 27- March 2

Hello Candalaria, Lee and McKinley Teachers,

Ok, here it is... Brenda's Bits first Blog! I'm taking a Tech class for my ESOL endorsement and one of my assigments is to create a blog, so I thought why not try this approach to my "Bit's"? The first one or two to reply that you saw my new blog gets a coffee card! You may even get two coffee cards if you write something great about it! ha!

You may have noticed that I've been in some buildings more than others during the past few weeks. The reason for this is; I've always believed that coaching is not a one day coach practice and then see you next time I'm scheduled at your building, but rather coaching is based on need or want. I coach 36 wonderful and talented teachers all with unique wants and needs. Yes, I would love to provide every teacher with equal time; however it's just not possible. So, what I am doing is responding to what you need in somewhat of a timely fashion based on how I can best support you. In other words, if you need me to coach over a period of days such as; modeling several consecutive lessons, please let me know, I would love to do just that.  So please understand that even though I might be "scheduled" at your building on a particular day, I may be working with a teacher at another building.  Email me with what you need and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.   Thanks for being flexible and understanding.

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

:ixlmath.com Some schools have a membership to this site, while others do not. However, you can access ixl math for 30 days; free! This site is based on state standards, so find Oregon Standards. Some teachers are using this as a practice for OAKS or used for intervention or extension. Once a student completes a math problem and summits the answer they can see if their answer is correct or not.  If the answer is not correct have students click on "explaninations" to see how to do the problem.

A few other websites for math pracitce that I have not shared before are:

illuminations.nctm.orgThis site is based on standards as well and has articles, lessons and interactive games.

http://nrich.maths.org/public/ This is an UK site, so make sure you click on the American flag on the right.  I went to Home to uderstand how the site was organized.  It seems as the UK has what they call stages instead of grades:)  Although the activities are not listened by standards there are some "unique" lessons.

This article is about using literacy in math.  A great article for how to incorporate using literacy in word problems with ELL students.
CAFE Comprehension strategies:  A few of you mentioned that you would like the labels for CAFE strategies so that you could print your own.  Please let me know if you would like them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57KW6RO8Rcs Instead of a quote this week, I've linked you to a video called, "What is Culture?"  Enjoy!

Have a great full week!
